Job Description

The ideal candidate will demonstrate extensive EDI knowledge within a complex organisation   You will have the commitment to project manage the EDI strategy within HR at the university.  This includes the design, implementation and embedding of approaches and initiatives to close staff related diversity gaps.   

You will be the lead contact in the HR department on EDI and related matters, including coordinating and overseeing EDI related projects and initiatives.


  • Work closely with HR Management Team, EDI Office, EDI groups, networks and committees to create and maintain an evidentially diverse and healthy workforce.
  • Act as a source of expertise in the HR team to establish inclusive ways of working, policies and practices and to support the team’s activities to mainstream staff EDI in directorates, faculties and overseas Units.
  • Provide expert EDI advice to HR teams on the employee lifecycle including recruitment, career progression, operational activities, change programmes and staff training to improve the quality of EDI guidance and advice across HR services and activities with staff.
  • Project managing and supporting the design and implementation of staff-related initiatives, projects and workstreams within the remit of the HR department (i.e. including staff wellbeing, staff engagement exercises, staff surveys, safeguarding, organisational values implementation etc).
  • Ensure recommendations to improve performance in EDI, staff wellbeing and other staff initiatives more widely are pragmatic and evidence based, working with HR Management Team members, HR Partners and relevant others to implement changes at policy, process and service level.
  • Undertake project scoping, effective project plans, risk registers, RAID, budget and resource requirements, communication and engagement plans, and regular status updates to stakeholders including how to mitigate risks.
  • Lead on collation, and where necessary, submission of pay gap data (i.e. gender pay, ethnicity pay etc), presenting data and reports to the HR Management Team, Executive Team and EDI Committees, including recommendations on how to make improvements in these areas (and support delivery and imbedding of these recommendations).
  • Working closely with the Communications & Engagement team and relevant others, to ensure effective strategic communication and stakeholder engagement across EDI
  • Independently research best practice and models in the higher education and other relevant sectors, and ensure that this EDI knowledge and awareness is disseminated, presented, updated, and embedded in policies and practice, so that awareness increased and legislation is adhered to throughout the university.
  • Work closely with relevant teams across the university on current and future submission requirements for Athena SWAN, Race Equality Charter and Research Excellence Concordat.
  • Working closely with colleagues in the Talent & Educational Development team, EDI Office and relevant others to develop and deliver training on EDI matters and other staff initiatives in the context of wider strategic projects.
  • Conduct Equality Impact Assessments, and ensure that EDI outcomes are considered and mainstreamed through the university’s strategies and operational plans.
  • Collating and submitting statutory returns e.g. Gender Pay Gap, Ethnicity Pay Gap etc.


  • Extensive EDI knowledge and evidence of achievements (in any sector) within a complex organisation.
  • Developed leadership ability, particularly gained in an organisation or sector experiencing change.
  • Achievements in delivery of equality objectives and culture change.
  • Significant track record in external verification and assessment of EDI.
  • Experience of supporting and/or delivering staff wellbeing initiatives.
  • Extensive project management and project delivery experience.
  • Strategic and operational expertise in EDI.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Persuasive and clear oral, written communication and report writing skills.
  • Highly developed skills in working on projects, independently, and in consulting and facilitating change with stakeholders.
