Part-Time Library Assistant - £14.03ph Plus Holiday Pay – London

 

Duration: 5 months

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Customer Enquiries & Learning Support

  • Communicate with library customers from the Library Desk & Help Point in person, by telephone, email, post and social media.
  • Deal with a wide range of customer enquiries relating to using library services.
  • Assist and provide basic guidance on a wide range of library resources including electronic journals, e-books and databases.
  • Register new customers on the library database and relevant access systems.
  • Advise visitors on membership options and make aware of facilities available to them at other institutions.
  • Participate in feedback collection from library users to inform service reviews and development and make suggestions to ensure continuous service improvement.
  • Provide tours and 1:1 support for new students, staff and visitors during inductions, open days and other special events.

 

Circulation Support & Administration

  • Facilitate the use of self-service borrowing and returning facilities, and resolve issues with library user records, explaining complex procedures and dealing with enquiries relating to circulation policies and procedures.
  • Cash handling including taking payments via cash and card for library fines and membership fees and carrying out daily banking procedures.
  • Deal with queries regarding requests, reservations, inter-library loans, Stores and Special Collections.
  • Receiving and processing new items, programming RFID tags and moving items into different locations and collections.
  • Assist Subject Liaison Librarians with withdrawing books, periodicals etc. or other related projects as and when required.
  • Make basic repairs to damaged items.
  • Deal with missing, lost and long overdue items and ensuring items are out of circulation for as short a time as possible.

 

Technology Support

  • Assist with the maintenance, trouble-shooting and problem solving of library technology.
  • Basic IT troubleshooting for common problems.
  • Register library visitors for Wi-Fi.
  • Assist library users in photocopying, scanning and printing.

 

Managing the Learning Environments

  • Identify customers in need of assistance and offering help at the point of contact.
  • Roving in the Libraries and library-managed learning spaces to ensure that users are adhering to Library Regulations, identifying users in need and giving directional support.
  • Ensure that library-managed learning spaces are maintained to a high standard.
  • Collect data on the number of people in the library when necessary, and other data about library usage.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Experience of dealing with the public and providing excellent customer service.
  • Experience of working in a library/information environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent IT skills including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent numeracy required for dealing with refunds, internal financial transfers, Excel data etc.
  • Ability to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team.
