Job Description

Hybrid 3 days home 2 day office based in South London.  My client is a leading university in London.  We are looking for someone with good experience in research finance management preferably with previous experience in the UK HE sector or similar environment 

In this role you will be responsible for overseeing the financial management of the externally funded research grants. You will provide guidance, support and training to a team of Research Grant Officers administering live awards on a day-to-day basis and will have responsibility for a small portfolio of EC-funded grants. You will also lead on research finance processes such as month-end, year-end and audits. In addition, you will work closely with the Manager to ensure development and implementation of improved systems and processes to help enhance the capacity of the university to secure and manage research and knowledge exchange income.

The role will require you to:

  • Take ownership of the effective management of large and complex grants, including EC-funded grants.
  • Review the portfolio of live grants, taking into account the financial elements of funders’ terms and conditions, and audit requirements as appropriate, ensuring a ‘clean’ portfolio of live research awards.
  • Lead on project and institutional audits.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of centralised financial reporting of the externally funded research income portfolio.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the research landscape ensuring that changes of policy and procedure on the part of major funding bodies are identified and appropriately acted upon.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of research finance management.
  • Previous experience of working within the UK HE sector.
  • Experience of managing EC-funded projects, e.g. ERC, MCSA, etc.
  • ACA/CIMA/ACCA qualification or equivalent working experience.
  • Experience of mentoring and training.
  • Knowledge of financial systems, including how to interrogate data and balances.
  • Knowledge of Business World/Agresso.
  • Knowledge of Worktribe.
  • Excellent numeracy skills and solid working knowledge of Excel.
  • A flexible approach to carrying out day-to-day duties, ability to prioritise effectively a varied workload and meet competing/demanding deadlines.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • An enthusiastic, self-motivated individual, able to work effectively on their own but also as part of a wider team
  • An innovative and creative thinker capable of suggesting practical solutions to new or unique problems.
  • A pro-active and collaborative approach.
