Job Description

Hybrid 3 days home 2 day office based in South London.  Working closely with the Manager of Pre- and Post-Award Teams and other colleagues in the Department, you will develop and implement improved systems and processes to help enhance the capacity of the university to secure and manage a growing research income portfolio.  You will be responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day management of a portfolio of research grants.   Providing front line support and advice to academics and their departments in the development and submission of high-quality applications for external funding. This includes proactively identifying and promoting available funding opportunities (primarily research-related opportunities but also opportunities for institutional capacity-strengthening and knowledge exchange activities), coordinating bid development (including the costing of projects and ensuring that internal approval processes are followed prior to submission) as well as working closely with others in the Department to provide ongoing advice and support to award-holders on elements of post-award grant management.

In this role you will:

  • Take a pro-active role in identifying and promoting available funding opportunities
  • Coordinate and manage the development of funding bids for externally sponsored research, institutional capacity-strengthening and knowledge exchange activities, ensuring that projects are accurately costed, that funders’ eligibility requirements are met and that internal approval processes are followed prior to submission.
  • Develop specialist knowledge of major funders in the UK and overseas (including their processes and priorities), building and maintaining effective working relationships with the funders and ensuring that the institute is well placed to identify and quickly respond to suitable opportunities as they arise.
  • Provide an effective horizon scanning function, including pro-actively developing intelligence to increase grant capture and target funding opportunities.
  • Understand and keep up-to-date with funders’ requirements, processes, policies and priorities, including those related to costing research proposals, due diligence, ethics, ODA compliance, safeguarding, open access and intellectual property, ensuring that any changes in policy and procedure on the part of funding bodies are brought to the attention of relevant colleagues and applied as appropriate.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience of working within the UK HE sector
  • Knowledge of research grant costing methodologies and administration including the application of fEC and major funders’ (e.g. EC and UKRI) rules.
  • Knowledge of the external research grant funding environment.
  • Knowledge of financial systems, including how to interrogate data and balances to create statutory and financial management information.
  • Qualifications ACA/CIMA/ACCA qualification or equivalent working experience. Experience of research grant management.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent numeracy skills and solid working knowledge of Excel
  • Flexible approach to carrying out day-to-day duties, ability to prioritise effectively a varied workload and meet demanding deadlines.
