Widening Participation Officer - £16.36ph plus hol pay - Central London

Hybrid – One day in the office.

 

Start: 30/01/2023

End: 1 month, Initially

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Widening Participation Officer delivers projects to address long-term barriers to higher education, particularly attainment of young people from underrepresented groups, as part of the university widening participation strategy and Access and Participation Plan.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leading on the coordination and delivery of allocated programmes and events, as directed by the Senior Widening Participation Officers and Widening Participation Manager.
  • Providing input on development of new programmes and review of existing programmes.
  • Supporting colleagues with the delivery of other Access and Widening Participation programmes and events.
  • Responding to general enquiries from prospective students, parents and teachers and answering general enquiry emails and telephone calls.
  • Recruiting and training students to work on programmes.
  • Liaising with academic and administrative departments including room bookings, catering, finance and HR, to ensure the smooth delivery of programmes and events.
  • Liaising with schools and colleges to promote and deliver programmes and to recruit eligible participants.
  • Developing and delivering workshops and information presentations about higher education to prospective students from Year 6 to 13, their families and school teachers.
  • Developing a strong awareness of child protection and safeguarding procedures.
  • Updating content on webpages and social media accounts.
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date records of schools and programme participants to aid monitoring, tracking and evaluation.
  • Processing finance payments and keeping accurate, up-to-date financial records.
  • Representing the university at higher education fairs, open days and giving presentations at schools and colleges.
  • Ensuring effective communication with line manager regarding work in progress.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Knowledge of UK secondary and higher education systems.
  • Experience of co-ordinating projects, programmes or events.
  • Experience of working with primary and/or secondary schools.
  • Experience of working with children and/or young people.
  • Experience of providing excellent customer service.
  • Administrative experience gained in a people-focused.
  • An understanding of child protection and safeguarding issues.
  • Experience of preparing and delivering workshops, lessons or presentations.
  • Enthusiasm for widening participation in higher education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A high level of numeracy and literacy.
  • Strong information technology skills, with the ability to use Microsoft Office software and quickly learn to use new software or web applications.
  • The ability to liaise with a wide range of people with tact and diplomacy.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a large team.
  • The ability to manage own workload and prioritise a high volume of complex work effectively.
