'Just a temp'

Referring to temporary workers as "just a temp" can be harmful and disrespectful for several reasons. Here’s why it's better to avoid that language
❌ Undermines Value: Temporary workers play an important role in many businesses, often taking on crucial tasks that keep operations running smoothly. Dismissing their contribution by labeling them as "just a temp" implies that their work is less important or not worthy of respect, which isn't true.
❌ Affects Morale: If temporary employees feel undervalued, it can harm their morale and sense of belonging. A positive, inclusive work culture is essential for team success and treating everyone, regardless of their employment status, with dignity fosters a better environment.
❌ Creates Division: Calling someone "just a temp" can create a divide between temporary and permanent workers, leading to a lack of collaboration and tension within the team. It may even lead to resentment from the temporary worker, who may feel disconnected or excluded.
❌Disregards Their Potential: Temporary positions can sometimes turn into permanent ones. A "just a temp" attitude disregards the potential that temporary workers have for growth within the company. They might possess valuable skills, experience, and dedication, and being dismissed as “just” something devalues those qualities.
❌ Reflects Poor Leadership: How leaders and managers speak to or about their employees impacts the overall culture. Leaders who devalue any role, including temporary positions, can send the message that respect and effort are contingent on status, not merit. This can contribute to poor retention rates, lower engagement, and even legal issues in some cases.
Recognizing temporary worker contributions and offering them respect ensures a positive working environment for everyone. Our temps are so much more than ‘just a temp’, they are superheroes stepping in to save the day! 🦸♂️
